Week Eight – Day Five – Last Day

Well today was the last day. It did not go as I had hoped, but it was a good day. Al and I finally got the code for the menus working, so I can use the site in my presentation. I got most of my stuff off the hard drive here, except for some tutorials I wanted, but I ran out of time.

It feels as if it has been a lot shorter than eight weeks, although there were a couple of days early on that felt as if they were a week or two long all by themselves! I’ve learned a lot, and I think met at least one person I will continue to stay in touch with.

I had brought my camera – wanted to get a group shot of everybody, but forgot about it until I started to pack my knapsack at the end of the day and saw the camera at the bottom. By then everyone was gone except for Al, me and one other person. I am a terrible person at saying goodbye – it feels odd that there was no sort of official acknowledgement that this was now over. Everyone just sort of wandered off as usual at the end of the week. Oh, well. C’est la vie!

and Au revoir…

Week Eight – Day Four

It’s getting near the end of the internship, just one more day to go. I am experiencing mixed feelings – I like some of the people here very much and it wil be sad to say goodbye. For the last few weeks I have been feeling more and more as if I am making a real contribution here, and not just doing “busywork” to fill in the time. I will miss that feeling of accomplishment.

On the other hand – I can challenge myself now, and get that feeling of accomplishment from succeeding at self-appointed tasks. (It’s just nicer when there’s someone else there to high-five when the code works!)

I will spend some time tomorrow taking all my personal stuff off the hard drive and organizing what I need to take along for my presentation and what I have to leave behind. I should get a jump on writing my report, as well. I should really have started it weeks ago, but this record should help me out quite a bit.

Week Eight – Day Three

I wish I had insisted that we make three tables on that darned database! It is taking forever to get the code right to load the menus – I will be so disappointed if it’s not finished by Friday – not only because we did promise it would be, but because if it isn’t, I won’t be able to include it in my presentation at school next week, and it is a great site!

I wish I could be of more help in writing the code – I am researching it online and proofreading it for errors (Al keeps leaving out the $ in the variables, gives me something to do!) but Al is writing the main part of it and getting more and more frustrated when the error messages pop up. Me, I hate it more when there are no error messages – it just fails to echo anything at all! At least with an error message you have a hint about what to fix and where to find it!

Week Eight – Day Two

OK – today I got about 60 pages into the database by 11:45 AM – then Alex realized that in order to query the db the way he wanted to, we had to add a column for the manufacturer’s name. So I did that, and manually entered the names for each of the pages, according to content. I went on and entered the rest of the pages – 115 in total – and was done by 2:45. I was so happy to be done with it!

Then Alex realized we had to be able to select for the menu and we needed three MORE fields – so I had to create them and then edit them according to either a boolean or an integer value…finally got finished just in time to clean up a couple of files on my computer and leave for the day. I sure hope Alex doesn’t realize anything else tomorrow! We’re supposed to be setting this all to PHP and finishing off the site – it is promised for delivery for Friday, my last day here.

Week Eight – Day One

9:20 A.M. Well today had a very inauspicious beginning – my daughter’s boss emailed her last night and asked her to go to Ottawa today to do a job – her car is in the shop so she had to take mine, which leaves me sitting at home. I know this internship is important, but it is also not paid, and her job is, so that made the decision a no-brainer. I have e-mailed them at work to see if there’s anything I can do from home today.

10:05 A.M.  So it appears I can do database work from home – this is a relief to me as I am concerned about missing the hours and not putting in as many as are necessary to complete this phase of the program. Hopefully the time spent at home working on company projects will count as well as the time spent in the office.

3:55 P.M. I spent part of today doing stuff around the house and now I’m going to start on the database. If I work for 6 hours I’ll be done about 10 P.M. – an early night for me.
