Week Seven – Day Five

Not in the office today – drove up to Kemptville to enroll my daughter for September at the University of Guelph Kemptville Campus.

WOW! What a place! I am blown away by how much is available to these kids – if there had been a course like this around when I was her age I would have leaped at it.

The she came home to Montreal and I went on to Kingston to set up a blogging website for the nice folks at I know it is a ridiculously long domain name but it’s what they wanted so we’re going with it. I got it installed and styled a theme for them and showed them how to add posts etc – they are very bright and will continue on their own quite easily, I think.

Back to work Monday – it will be my last week.

Week Seven – Day Four

Well, be careful what you wish for. First thing this morning I was told I had a new assignment – slice and code the landing page for the site we have been working on.

I had been longing for a new assignment – this should be fun (my first thought). Then I saw the challenge I was facing – taking one large image, and not using ImageMapping, slice the layers and create the page so all the images were in the CSS, not the HTML, and yet have ONLY images, no text, and links on the images. Also, write a javascript to  read the browser window’s size and load different style sheets to fit, and write the stylesheets to go with it, sizing the images accordingly as well.

It took me all day but I got it done – setting up the divs and putting links for images that exist in the CSS (you can’t have a link outside a whole div, and with no text to put the link on…) It was tough and I had to ask Alex for help at one point but I did get it done.

One of the last things I did was to tweak the javascript to display the image without having it overflow at all, in whatever browser, at whatever resolution – this  was not as hard as it sounds, – all you do is call the CSS for the resolution below the one in the browser and set all your margins to “auto” and there you are. I am so glad I know how to do this now – it is a very handy trick to know and this method will adapt itself to other sites very easily.

Week Seven – Day Three

I have to say I am looking forward, when this internship is over, to not having to write something every day – the record of what I did is valuable, but I do begrudge the time – I have such short evenings as it is, after being out of the house for 10 or more hours a day. (I dream of a day off to do laundry – pathetic!)

I am just doing pages again today, copy-and-paste stuff. I know it has to be done and while it is not urgent it is important – without content even the prettiest website isn’t worth much. But it is boring, repetitive work, so I’ll be glad when it’s done and I can move on to something new.

Week Seven – Day Two

The ongoing virus-hunt continues – the guy beside me found something on his computer first thing this morning – we spent some time looking it up to see what it does and what to do about it – then he had to use my work computer to do some stuff and I was relegated to just working on my laptop. I was glad to do it, it gave me a chance to follow along on one of the tutorials and I think I am really getting a handle on this stuff now – a small handle, but a handle nonetheless.

Then later in the day I spent a fair bit of time finishing up some odds and ends on various projects – organizing files and folders, stuff like that. As messy as I admit I am in my house, that’s how compulsively organized I am on the computer. (It thrills me to be able to find whatever file  I’m looking for whenever I need it – unlike my house where I’m lucky if I can find my family most of the time!)

I still have some catch-up work to do for the CGI part of  the program at school, but given the hours I am working it begins to look as if I may not get it done in time – I find I am less upset at the thought than I expected to be – but it does seem too bad to have put in all this time and effort and not even have a certificate to show for it… I just don’t know where I’ll find the time to get it done. I do actually know how to do all the stuff we’re required to do for the assignments – especially now that I’ve been working “in the field”, as it were – I just don’t have the time to write all the pages I’d need to do. I’ll have to see what I can get done this weekend.

Week Seven – Day One

So today we finally finished the interior page content (product descriptions) for the site we have been working on for what seems like weeks now. They got the other intern to help me out. This sounded like a good idea, but the interruptions as we handed files back and forth really threw me off my rhythm and although he did get the last several pages done, I didn’t get finished integrating them into the menu and internal PHP files until after 5 pm.

Near the end of the day, one of the bosses came over and offered me the chance to download a bunch of really super video tutorials from a paid site where he is s a member. I jumped at the chance – this is a site I use frequently for the free content, but I have been unable to access the paid content – after all, I’m still a “starving student”! I downloaded a bunch of tutorials on PHP and also on using WordPress as a CMS – the first because it has become increasingly clear to me that every single site we have worked on since I have been here has used PHP to some extent, and the second because I think it is unnecessary to re-invent the wheel when all you have to do to accommodate a large majority of situations is a bit of an overhaul.

All-in-all a pretty good day.
